Sun spots, Rocks, and Slurpees

Let me begin with this - the purpose - the vision - the inspiration behind such a blog named sun spots, rocks, and slurpees. Represented in this title are three things I love very much for three very different reasons. The first item or items are Sun spots. Sun spots (for those of you that don't know) are black spots on the sun's surface - or at least that's the technical definition. It turns out that in my world sun spots refer to those warm spots in your house or in a shaded park where the sun is. Those are my favorite places. I will move furniture so I can lay in them and even roast myself just to bask in glory of the sun. The second item - rocks - has a more symbolic meaning then literal. Although I do like rocks I would not stretch the truth to say I love them. What I do love however, is where the rocks are - outside. Since coming to British Columbia - the most beautiful place on earth (I kid you not) - I have slowly worked myself out of the classroom and into the great beauty of God's creation. Thanks to the love of my life, Brandon, and many of my other good friends here, I have risen to great physical challenges and celebrated with joy in the victory of completion. My life story has become full of excitement as I have experienced caving, hiking, midnight waterfall repelling, ice climbing, slack lining, boating, off-roading, and other incredible adventures (some of which I have cried through) each with their own battles, risks, and liberties. The third item captured in my title – slurpees – are hopefully something everyone reading is familiar with (if you have never tried one, do it, its nothing incredible, just fun, and for extra fun I would suggest buying some sort of sour five cent candy and sticking it in the slurpee and then pulling it out after a couple sips and eating it when its good and cold – the blue and pink coke bottles are the best). For me slurpees are all about fun. If any of you is a crazy calorie counter or health enthusiast – beware – slurpees are a threat to everything you stand for. Slurpees are nothing but a sugary, syrupy, frozen beverage with nothing but empty fun tasting calories – and that’s why I love them. They go against all my healthy tendencies – they completely counteract my half-hour cardio sessions at the gym – but their fun, and simple, and childish. Brandon and I love getting slurpees together. We buy a dollar’s worth of five cent candy and two slurpees (he gets a big one with the fruity flavors and I get Pepsi) and just drive together, looking at homes and having no real plans for where we’re going. Those moments are priceless and I hope to create a taste bud memory so that every time I have a slurpee I will remember the times when we could dink slurpees and not be a thousand pounds, when we were young and we could just be (although I do hope to “just be” the rest of my life).

So that’s the skinny on Sun spots, Rocks, and Slurpees. This blog is all about those kind of things. The things that make me smile, the adventures I have, and those special moments that come from brain freeze in a hot car. Blogs have been around for quite sometime now and they have never been my thing. I never had anything to write about and then I decided – today – Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 – that I would write about the things that make me happy. I never want to forget the joy in my life. I forgot it once before and I will never forget again.

Before I go I want to open this blog to all those who read with an invitation. If you have any memories of me, things that make you smile, things I may have done as a child, just things you like – add them on as comments – and lets share the joy together.

Sincerely

Alyssa J Molenaar
